Five Tips for Moving With Pets

As stressful as moving is for adults, a move can be even more stressful for our four-legged friends. New noises, new smells, commotion, change and uncertainty can create a confusing time for them. Here are some great tips for a smooth move for the whole family!

Introduce Your Pet Early
If possible, take your dog for a few walks in their new neighbourhood to familiarize them, and walk by the new home a few times. This will allow your pet to get used to the new smells (and trees) of the neighbourhood.

Create a Doggy Bag
Before the big move, assemble a kit that has enough food, litter, toys, any necessary medication and grooming tools to keep them comfortable during the first few days of unpacking. This will also make your life easier as you tackle the unpacking of your new home.

Set Up Their Space
When you get the keys for your new place, set up their bed with their favourite toys and blankets in a quiet corner so they have a space to call their own in your new home.

Keep Them Safe
On the day of the move, keep them in a crate so that they are contained and safe during the car ride to the new home. For cat owners, it’s best to keep them inside for a few days before letting them loose in a new and strange neighbourhood.

Make a Grooming Appointment
Animals often show stress by shedding, so it’s a great idea to get them groomed a week or so before the moving day. The alternative is having to spend the first week in your new home cleaning up tufts of fur from the new floors, and nobody has time for that!
